Article for my Sounds of the Underground column for the May 2011 edition of Time Out Sao Paulo.

Sounds of the Underground
Bodes e Elefantes

Guilherme Granado has released two records as Bodes e Elefantes, both expansive, free-form pieces that use a mixture of electronics and live instruments to experiment with texture and rhythm. Live, the project takes on a whole new level as Guilherme will be joined by drums, percussion, saxophone, cavaquinho and bass, with himself on the vibraphone. If this sounds like a recipe for free jazz then you’re not far off. Bodes e Elefantes live are a feat to behold with layer upon layer of sound anchored by plenty of bass and percussion, as is the Brazilian way, to create something that really does make you feel like your feet are coming off the floor! You should also know that these musicians have played with Pharoah Sanders and Yusuf Lateef, so they have the pedigree.
